Dual Layer Firmware for SOHW-1633S / SOHW-1633SX Drives Released: Improvement in DVD-R writing times
"Lite-On is pleased to announce an enhanced version of firmware that allows faster Double Layer (DL) writing performance, available at "no-charge" for SOHW-1633S and SOHW-1633SX drives only." With this new firmware, the specified DVD-RW drives will increase DL speed to 4X; an improvement from the previous 2.4X specification.

As an added feature, this also provides an improvement in DVD recorder writing times by increasing the speed to 12X from the previous 8X specification. After updating these drives with the enhanced firmware, the 16X writing performance for DVD recorder and the 12X "burning" speed for DVD-R discs provides consumers with the added versatility and flexibility in recording options. The Double Layer discs hold 8.5GB while the single layer discs only hold 4.7GB of data.

HD DVD Backed by Major Studios
"Warner, Paramount, Universal and New Line Cinema have all agreed to issue movies in the upcoming HD DVD recorder format," Toshiba, the co-creator of the product said today.

"The four represent 45 per cent of the major studios' DVD recorder output in the US," said the Japanese technology giant.

Toshiba clearly feels it has to get an edge on the release of this product, with Sony aggressively pushing its rival high-capacity optical disc format, Blu-ray.

Both products use a blue laser to read the information off the carrier rather than the red laser that most of today's buy DVD recorder systems use. Blue light has a shorter wavelength, which means that the area on the disc used to encode data can be smaller. This means a higher capacity because you can fit more info in a smaller area.

On capacity, Blu-ray wins, giving 25GB on a single-layer disc compared to HD DVD's 20GB. The bad news is they will need to open up another production line. HD DVD, only needs to use existing DVD pressing setups to be retooled rather than replaced. Strength of the buy DVD recorder brand has been very strongly pushed to consumers over the last seven years or so also.

The format clearly has backing from the studios, but so does Blu-ray, with Sony almost certainly offering content on the medium, and possibly MGM - recently acquired by Sony - and 20th Century Fox, too."
